Your intake appointment takes around 60 minutes and is run by one of our Accredited Exercise Physiologists. It’s a chance for us to get to know your child and the family, their goals, preferences, likes and dislikes, and what helps them feel comfortable and confident with us.

During the assessment, your child will take part in a few simple movement challenges and parents/carers will be asked to complete some questionnaires. This information help us understand current needs and strengths, and make recommendations on programs going forward. The movement challenges are tailored for the participant, but examples include:

  • Jumping and hopping – skills, distance or height
  • Balance challenges – stand on one leg, walk heel to toe
  • Measure of muscle strength – sit to stand, push ups,
  • Movement/sport skills – kicking, throwing, catching and hopping

We may work through all of these, or just a few, depending on your child. What matters most is understanding your child, so we can help them feel safe and confident in our space and find the sessions that suit them best.

Yes! Just ask our team and we can organise a time for you to see the space before your first session.

A video walk through and photos will also be available on the website soon.

We’re keen to work with families to support sibling engagement wherever possible. For individual consultations, two people can share a single consultation, for example two siblings, or a parent and child. Where more than two people are involved, an additional per person rate applies. Speak with our team about what will work best for your family.

This varies across our programs, and we have specific programs where families can be active together. Please check the relevant program page or ask the team when you enrol.

If you cancel by 3pm the day before your session, we’ll do our best to offer an alternative time or a make-up session within the next fortnight, though this depends on availability and clinical suitability.

Cancellations made after 3pm the day before are not eligible for an alternative session. If a session is cancelled on our end, for example due to staff absence, we’ll issue a session credit.

Enrolment blocks and direct debit arrangements have their own notice periods for pausing or ending services.

Full details are set out in our Terms and Conditions, available on request or at enrolment.

Private health insurance rebates may be available where sessions are delivered by an Accredited Exercise Physiologist.

If you’d like to claim through Medicare or your private health fund, let your program coordinator know before your term starts, so this can be arranged where possible. Families with NDIS funding (self-managed or plan-managed) may also be able to use their plan to cover sessions, depending on their plan and support categories.

Our team can talk you through what applies to your circumstances.

Our sessions are delivered by exercise experts including university-qualified Accredited Exercise Scientist and Accredited Exercise Physiologists through Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA).
Our senior team includes national leaders in this field of practice with extensive experience in paediatric and complex care exercise delivery. Members of our senior team also hold academic positions at leading universities, so the training and mentoring our staff receive is continually informed by current teaching and research, not just clinical practice. This means the programs your child takes part in are built on evidence that stays current, and our team’s development is ongoing. This means the programs your child takes part in are built on current research, not just clinical experience, and our team is continually involved in professional development and research translation to keep that expertise current.

No referral or diagnosis is needed to attend our sessions. If you’re not sure whether we’re the right fit, reach out and one of our team will get back to you.

Every session is adapted to suit the young person’s abilities, presentation and goals, whether that’s one on one, small group or larger group sessions.

We celebrate uniqueness and diversity, so there’s no one size fits all approach. Some sessions look a lot like play, others look more like a traditional gym session, depending on what will get young people moving and enjoying it.

Most definitely. At Thriving in Motion we pride ourselves on meeting families and kids where they are at. Our sessions are led by qualified exercise physiologists who adjust each activity to suit the young people in the room, so your child can take part at their own level and feel successful. Children who find movement harder are just as at home here as those who take to it more easily.
