15 Years of Thriving in Motion: The Heart of Inclusive Youth Exercise
Fifteen years ago, Thriving in Motion began with a clear belief: every young person deserves to feel safe, strong and seen in their body. What started in borrowed spaces with a small group of families has grown into a leading Western Australian not-for-profit delivering inclusive, evidence-informed exercise programs for young people.
From the beginning, we recognised that many children and teens, particularly those living with disability, chronic illness, neurodivergence or complex mental health challenges, were excluded from traditional sport and physical activity settings. Not because of a lack of ability, but because those environments were not designed with them in mind.
So we built something different.
Thriving in Motion exists to use exercise expertise to improve the physical and mental health of children and young people. Our programs are grounded in research, shaped by lived experience, and designed to ensure every participant experiences belonging, dignity and positive movement.
Over the past 15 years, we have expanded partnerships with families, clinicians, schools, government and community organisations across Western Australia. We have grown our team, strengthened governance, and are preparing to open our first dedicated facility, a significant milestone in expanding access to inclusive youth exercise services.
While our scale has increased, our purpose remains unchanged:
Improve youth physical and mental health outcomes through evidence-informed exercise
Strengthen family, community and health professional knowledge about the role of exercise in health
Create safe, empowering and accessible movement environments for all young people
The next chapter of Thriving in Motion’s 15-year journey is focused on deepening impact: reaching more young people, strengthening community partnerships and continuing to lead in inclusive health promotion.
The footprint is larger.
The mission is sharper.
The heart remains the same.
