Felicity Austin
Can you tell us a little about your work with MHEX?

As part of the MHEX projects, I use exercise as a tool to support young people’s physical and mental health. My role focuses on creating safe, inclusive spaces where movement feels accessible, enjoyable, empowering and fun! Alongside this, I’m completing my PhD, which focuses on the experiences of trans and gender diverse young people.

What inspired you to get into this field of research?

I love how movement can change how we feel, physically, emotionally, and socially. In my work, I noticed that many people, especially those in marginalised communities or living with disability, were missing out on these benefits. That motivated me to focus on making exercise safe and accessible for everyone, and to be a strong ally for individuals who may need someone by their side

What’s the part of your work you enjoy the most? And the most challenging?

Seeing the real-world impact, when someone who thought exercise “wasn’t for them” starts to enjoy it, feel stronger, and build confidence. That’s the best part. If I can make a difference to even one individual or family, then it’s all worthwhile.

Challenging … let’s just say statistics, spreadsheets and I are still working on our relationship!

What’s one project or piece of work you’re most excited about right now?
My PhD research exploring how exercise physiology can better support transgender and gender diverse young people. This is a group that often faces barriers in exercise spaces, and I’m excited about creating more affirming and supportive pathways for them. The past four years have been incredibly rewarding, working closely with young people, their families, and other health professionals who are committed to this area.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?

I love being outdoors, especially in the ocean. I also enjoy spending time with my family, close friends, and my dog.

Do you have a favourite quote, motto, or piece of advice that guides you?

“Movement is medicine”

Finally, what would you say to someone interested in starting a career in research?

Be curious and persistent. Research can feel like a long rollercoaster, but if you care about the questions you’re asking, and the people you’re working with, it’s absolutely worth the ride.
