I am currently working on some of our research investigating the physiological effects of chest binding on physical function, and planning possible extensions of this research stream to answer other questions that binder-wearers and health professionals have related to binder use.
When our community group informed us of the current advice against binder use, that triggered me to investigate it further so that we can use research to better guide health care and advice (I hate when advice is given based on no research or “poor science”).
I like interpreting stats but hate generating them.
What’s one project or piece of work you’re most excited about right now?
Our binder study. Advice currently given to people is to not wear chest binders during physical activity because it may be restrictive and dangerous but there is little to no research into this. Being able to test the physiological effects of wearing a chest binder is important as it tests the accuracy of this advice or gives a scientific reason to change it.
What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
I am the father of a 2 year old and own a golden retriever… we will be exploring parks somewhere.
Do you have a favourite quote, motto, or piece of advice that guides you?
There was an article written by a philosophy lecturer in The Conversation years ago titled “No. You’re not entitled to your opinion”. A great read about opinions and facts.
Finally, what would you say to someone interested in starting a career in research?
From someone who consumed research for my career and then made my way into research…make your research about more than just doing research for the sake of doing research. Make it meaningful for people who use your research and the people they use it to help.
