Exercise for the adults in a child's life

Children learn what movement means by watching the adults around them. When a parent, carer or grandparent takes their own health seriously, and enjoys it, that child is far more likely to grow up active and confident in their body. So supporting you is part of how we support them.

You do not need to be sporty, already fit, or comfortable in a gym. Our Accredited Exercise Physiologists and Exercise Scientists adapt every session to the person in front of them, whatever your starting point, health conditions or goals.

We run four programs for adults. If you are not sure which one fits, start below.

How exercise helps your family

Regular exercise slows the effects of ageing and adds years lived in good health and independence. For you, that means more energy, a stronger heart, muscles and bones, better mood, sharper thinking, and more confidence that your body will do what you ask of it.

For the children in your life, it means something else again. Physical activity habits are learned at home long before they are learned anywhere else, and the strongest predictor of an active child is an active adult nearby. Children who see movement modelled as ordinary, enjoyable and unremarkable are more likely to carry that into adulthood themselves.

That is why a children’s charity runs programs for adults. Adults come to us for their own health as well, and everyone is welcome.

Which program is for me?

I want to get stronger and healthier, so I can keep up with my kids. One-on-one support, a small studio group, or a group class. Built around you and your goals. Thriving Adults

I want to stay strong and steady enough to be there for my grandchildren. Strength, balance and falls prevention in a supportive social group. Thriving Gold

I want to be active alongside my child or grandchild, not on the sidelines. Games, challenges and movement for adults and children together. Free. Thriving Generations

I am raising a child with disability or additional needs, and I need something for me. A peer community for parents and carers who understand. Fit 4 Family

Thriving Adults

Thriving Adults is our general adult program, and it is where most people start. Whether you are returning to exercise after years away, managing a health condition, working towards something specific, or simply want the energy to get through the day and still have something left for your family, we will build the program around you.

Choose one-on-one support, a small studio group of no more than four, or a group class. You can move between them as your confidence and goals change.

Medicare, NDIS, DVA and private health rebates may apply. We will talk you through what you are eligible for at your first appointment.

Thriving Generations

Thriving Generations is movement for adults and children together. Games, playful challenges and activities that work for a five year old and a grandparent in the same room, at the same time, without either of them standing on the sidelines.

Children learn what movement means from the adults around them, and they learn it fastest by doing it with you. Sessions are built so that both of you are participating, so the child sees an adult trying something new, getting it wrong, laughing about it and having another go.

Groups run with up to ten families, which makes it a straightforward way to meet other families in your area. Sessions run by term at community venues across Perth. Current and upcoming intakes are below.

Who it is for
Children and the adults in their lives. Parents, carers, grandparents, aunties and uncles are all welcome.

Weekly one hour sessions across a ten week term, in groups of up to ten families.
Cost
Free. Thriving Generations is fully funded thanks to the City of Stirling Community Grants Program, so there is no cost to your family.

Thriving Gold

Thriving Gold is for older adults who want to stay strong, steady and independent. Strength, balance and mobility work sit at the centre of it, because those are the things that keep you doing what you want to do, whether that is getting off the floor after playing with a grandchild, carrying the shopping, or simply moving through your day with greater ease.

Falls are the leading cause of injury and hospitalisation in older Australians, and the evidence on prevention is clear. Progressive strength and balance training works. Our Accredited Exercise Physiologists will build the program around your current ability and progress it as you get stronger, so it is challenging without being intimidating.

Sessions will run in a small, social group. In our experience, the company ends up being as much of a reason to come back as the exercise.

Fit 4 Family

Fit 4 Family is for parents and carers raising a child with disability or additional needs. Caring for a child with high support needs is physically demanding and rarely leaves room for your own health. Most of the families we work with tell us the same thing, that they know they should be doing something for themselves and cannot see where it fits.

This is a program built around that reality. Sessions are designed for adults who are tired, time poor and not looking to be told what they already know. You will train alongside other parents and carers who understand the week you have had without you needing to explain it.

Our Accredited Exercise Physiologists adapt every session to the person in front of them, and design the exercise to support the physical and mental loads parents and carers experience.
